Vacuum Bag

The Dulcet Curmudgeon
Even as children we atmosphere ourselves with things that have meaning for us. Sometimes it is just for convenience or comfort. Sometimes it is to add productivity or quality to our daily lives. Once in a accomplished while it is just because that impractical thing touches a hidden place within. Have you ever loved a thing for no explainable reason. Your first car dialect mayhap. Maybe it was linked to a cherished ambition or some lovely expression of artistic craft. Perhaps you felt the tug and couldn’t elucidate your reason. “It’s only a thing,” you might say to yourself. Talking sense to yourself in a case like this never helps, though. I have felt my reason leave me. Wondered at myself for that wild longing to rescue an object of little outward value. Here’s how it happened to me…. I was visiting my neighbor as she prepared for a huge substitute in her life. A seven hundred mile move, a new life as a single mom, and a new career in nursing were all in her plans. She was sorting and disposing of things she had poised in another chapter of her life. Things that would no longer help with current needs. Things that were tied to dreams that would have to be forgotten or postponed. She had invited us to stopover and see if anything among the items she was leaving behind was of interest to me or my husband. We wandered through the piles that she and her three daughters were stacking in every corner and smiled at her furor. The old piano squatted in her living room as if it had grown there. Dusty, dim and silent it stood in the corner with one side of its top veneer curled in a ill-tempered scowl. Where they were missing their covers they sported inky patterns sketched by someone with a blue ball point and no fealty for age. There was a smell of sour wood about the case that reminded me of an old chess board stored too long in the basement. The top and sides had been stripped to a pampered wooden velvet like a tired cinnamon stick after too many mugs of hot spiced cider. I lifted the take into account and stood on tiptoe to peer inside at the tangle of wires and levers that once may have filled some noisy bar room with music. Clutched at the centre of the thing was an odd wooden box with a brass crankshaft and a mysterious spool of punched paper rolled and ready. “Look,” I said to my hubby, “It’s a player piano. ” He peered warily from the next room without commenting. “Have you ever played it. ” I asked my co-worker. Any plans she might have had for that piano were far in the past. I regarded the old instrument as it slouched stubbornly rooted to the floor. How would we ever move it. Her eldest daughter piped up, “I have four well-established friends on the high school football team. maybe, I mused. ” I asked curiously, just to help myself elect. “Not really,” said my friend, “it leaks air, some strings are broken, and I think it needs new hammers. We just didn’t have the time or wealthy to get it working. ” I knew it was a foolish idea, but suddenly I pictured my husband tinkering the raggedy old derelict back into working level in his spare time. After all, he did all our car repairs himself, and he could fix anything electronic. ” Reluctantly he turned, saw the object of interest, and made a disagreeable face. “You could fix this, couldn’t you. “I’m not going to get involved with that thing. Like water seeking sea level, my desires channeled themselves a new tow-path. Maybe we could find someone who.
